Phoebe Levine is a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and she is the Program Coordinator for Read, Write, Serve, the church’s tutoring program.
Since St. Peter’s does not have an official school, the church adopted Druid Hills Academy’s scholars.
Levine facilitates the program by gathering and organizing materials for the 12 students in the program, designing lessons, recruiting and training volunteers,
and giving them weekly feedback. You would think this is enough to keep her busy, but she finds time to tutor students as well.
One of the most remarkable things about her is that she reads each student’s weekly journal entry, as well as the comments left in journals by tutors. As a result, she is able to
honor requests made by tutors and make modifications to lessons as needed.
As a result of her efforts, elders in our community share their time and talents with students who enjoy and benefit from the one-on-one attention and support.
Druid Hills teachers are inspired daily when they see scholars walking to and from tutoring sessions with their personal tutors/mentors, both with bright smiles.
“While on my morning duty post, I often see students rushing to their classes from breakfast because they know
their tutors are coming to work with them,” says Lara Harris of Druid Hills Academy. “This observation warms my hearts, and it is a reminder of the
significant impact of dedication and love.”
Levine’s work at Druid Hills Academy is making a difference in the individual lives of the scholars the program touches. In addition, her dedication and love for what she does
is an exemplar of how other organizations and businesses can partner with schools.
