Reading Hero: Perneice Mendez

Perneice Mendez’s daily work with students is driven by a firm belief in their boundless potential.

She brings passion and energy to her work as an afterschool site coordinator with Black Child Development Institute – Carolinas, and an unwavering commitment to helping as many children as possible, said Dr. Devonya Govan-Hunt, president of BCDI – Carolinas.

“Ms. Mendez is a true gem!” Govan-Hunt said. “As a lifelong learner, she approaches each day with curiosity, compassion, and a belief in the boundless potential of every child she meets. We are beyond grateful for her dedication and the lasting impact she makes.”

Mendez sees her work as a piece of the puzzle in ensuring all children in our community have the support they need.

“I believe in the village, and I choose to be a part of the village,” she said.

Mendez’s commitment to helping children reach their literacy goals is inspiring, Govan-Hunt said, and helps them discover the joy of reading.

“I have had the privilege of witnessing her in action – not only as a dedicated parent advocate but also as a nurturer, empowering families and parents alongside their children,” Govan-Hunt said. “Her commitment to our community ensures that children not only reach their full potential but also discover the simple joy of reading. Without champions like Ms. Mendez, many children might never realize the power of their own voices, stories, and dreams.”
