Read Charlotte was established in 2015, after test scores indicated only 40% of Charlotte’s third-graders were reading on grade level. The community recognized this as a crisis, as reading proficiency at third grade is a critical predictor of school, career, and life success.
What began as a community conversation took shape as a community initiative, with support from local business, nonprofit, education, philanthropic, and civic leaders.
Read Charlotte’s advisory board sets the vision, develops strategy, and oversees use of funding.
Read Charlotte’s work depends on the generosity of funders. These corporations and foundations support our children’s reading initiative.
Read Charlotte works with partners across our community, in a variety of capacities. Our work would not be possible without them.
The Read Charlotte team keeps day-to-day operations running smoothly while holding focus on the big picture goals of our children’s reading initiative. We’re passionate about our work and believe we can create real change in the community.
Read Charlotte is a community initiative that unites educators, community partners, and families to improve children’s reading from birth to third grade. We don’t run programs. We are a capacity-building intermediary that supports local partners to apply evidence-based knowledge about effective reading instruction and interventions, high-quality execution, continuous improvement, and data analysis to improve reading outcomes.
Read Charlotte is a civic initiative of Foundation For The Carolinas.
